Our Story

The Why

Amber, the founder of Educators' Mental Health Space, is an early childhood teacher who has been working in the early childhood sector since 2012. Amber is highly passionate about early childhood teaching, but she also knows that the feelings of burnout and emotional exhaustion have always been there. After reading many research articles on early childhood educators’ psychological wellbeing, specifically on work-related psychological injuries, high stress level, emotional challenges in this profession, it is confronting and overwhelming because that is the life she have been living in for the last decade and she was alone on that journey. It resonates to her that the struggles that educators are going through are real and it is reflected on the high turn over rate and low staff retention, however, it felt like the elephant in the room to her, as she did not know how to address it or who to address this issue to or.

Through the experience of learning and practicing psychotherapy, Amber had the opportunities to study burnout, stress cycle, window of tolerance, the emotional brain from a professional lens. It is evident that the clinical outcomes of psychotherapy have been tested and evaluated since the mid-20th century, so Amber decided to develop mental health programs to support educators to cope with those difficulties, to address psychological injuries at work, and more importantly, to decompress as a team in a fun and engaging way.

The How

The aim of all the services provided by Educators Mental Health Space is to create a safe, gentle and trusting space for educators to reflect on their interpersonal skills, practices, personal and organisational factors that affecting their psychological wellbeing.

The programs incorporates strategies and techniques from many evidence-based mental health modalities, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Art Therapy, and Group Therapy. Each activity in the programs is designed with thoughtful intentions to achieve therapeutic outcomes.

The programs are at the psycho-educational level, it is not suitable for people with severe mental health disorders. In order to provide a safe and gentle space, the educators take control of the progress and the depth of participation.
